I'm just getting started as an independent knit & crochet designer although I've been knitting & crocheting for years. At the beginning of 2018 I decided I wanted to start publishing patterns. It's been a helluva ride! Fun, challenging, surprising. Here's what I've learned from it so far. Maybe it'll help someone else too!
1. Be brave. You just gotta go for it. If it flops, it flops but at least you tried. I was really scared to publish my first pattern online but it turned out to not be as scary as I thought at all even though I made some mistakes and had to figure out how to fix them. It was actually really worth the effort.
2. Get support. Being brave is easier when you have support from family or friends, mentors or online groups where you can ask questions and get advice or just encouragement. My husband and friends have been really supportive and encouraging, my daughter has been my knitwear model and I've been able to find supportive places online. I'm so grateful for all of them!
3. Take it one thing at a time. Don't overwhelm yourself. It's ok to take it slow and just check one thing off your list at a time. Life has a way of overwhelming us anyway, so don't add more than you can handle to your day-to-day. Things will grow and develop they way they should, so relax and take it one thing at a time.
How about you? Any tips for newbies just getting their creative work out there? Leave them in the comments below, I'd love to hear them!
